• Based on the participation and sharing with the Internet community, AFNIC R&D leads French contributions to the development the Internet standards of today and tomorrow.

Since its inception in 1997, AFNIC has always made R&D a crucial focus for its strategy. AFNIC engineers and researchers are actively involved in development of the future standards and innovative services of tomorrow's Internet. Their work also helps promote the attractiveness of the .fr and .re namespaces in the highly competitive market for domain names, as well as the technological lead in French namespaces. In permanent contact with international experts, AFNIC researchers and engineers also make an active contribution to the wealth and diversity of the Internet technical community in France, by sharing their knowledge and expertise.

Anticipating developments in technology and uses

AFNIC RESEARCHERS and engineers are involved in the main Internet standardization and coordination bodies. They play an active role in the working groups of the IETF (http://www.ietf.org/), particularly on issues related to domain names and network infrastructures. AFNIC is also represented in the meetings of RIPE (http://www.ripe.net/ripe/), CENTR (Tech and R&D, ), DNS-OARC (http://www.dns-oarc.net/), G6 (http://www.g6.asso.fr/) and in major national and international conferences dedicated to the coordination and management of Internet resources. Constant technology watch of this kind provides input for their analyses, and their search for innovative solutions to improve the operational performance of registry management, and enable the creation of new services that enhance the attractiveness of the .fr and .re TLDs.

Share expertise and research findings

Backed by a tradition of sharing and disseminating knowledge, AFNIC plays an active role in disseminating and sharing its research results and technical expertise, both in the technical community of the Internet in France and internationally. AFNIC researchers and engineers take part in workshops, seminars and conferences organized by its partners, educational institutions and institutions. They are also take part in advanced technical training courses on issues such as IPv6, DNSSEC and IDN. Thanks to the technical and operational skills of its staff, AFNIC is also highly involved in the discussions and debates on Internet governance, development and uses.

Dreaming and designing the future internet

Through its research and innovative projects, AFNIC asserts its intention to continue to play a pioneering role in the study, design, implementation and testing of technologies that address the uses of the Internet of the future. That focus also helps to ensure the long-term presence on the leading edge of the French Internet community in the development of future technologies and standards. The AFNIC R&D team designs its projects in partnership with private and public stakeholders. These research projects cover a variety of wide-ranging issues concerning registry business lines.
