Afnic, the association that manages and operates various Internet TLDs and is the registrar for .fr, is hosting the Afnic Forum for a trustworthy Internet. This first series of debates and awareness-raising sessions on the fight against online abuse will be held from 2 July to 19 November. Through four workshops, which will be open to all, Afnic aims to spread information and disseminate best practices that can contribute to the fight against abuse. The forum will open on 2 July with an online round table session appropriately dedicated to the handling of abuse linked to the COVID-19 health crisis.

Afnic is an open non-profit organisation with its origins in the academic world. Designated by the State to manage .fr domain names, Afnic is a centre of expertise with its finger directly on the pulse of developments concerning the Internet. Its technical and legal experts and its research and development unit contribute on a daily basis to building trust on the Internet. Afnic sees this series of events as a platform for exchanges and for discussions as wide-ranging as possible.

Pierre Bonis, CEO of Afnic, defined its objective as follows: “Given its role as registry and operator, Afnic is confronted by many different kinds of online abuse, and is called upon to arbitrate in disputes that often concern parties where each one is convinced that it is the other that is committing abuse. Our conviction is that a trustworthy Internet is possible providing we share all the technical, legal and institutional levers and all the successful experiences in limiting abuse, making sure these actions do not penalise the vast majority of users of the domain names system”.

About Afnic

Afnic is the acronym for Association Française pour le Nommage Internet en Coopération, the French Network Information Centre. The registry has been appointed by the French government to manage domain names under the .fr Top Level Domain. Afnic also manages the .re (Reunion Island), .pm (Saint-Pierre and Miquelon), .tf (French Southern and Antarctic Territories), .wf (Wallis and Futuna) and .yt (Mayotte) French Overseas TLDs.

In addition to managing French TLDs, Afnic’s role is part of a wider public interest mission, which is to contribute on a daily basis, thanks to the efforts of its teams and its members, to a secure and stable internet, open to innovation and in which the French internet community plays a leading role. As part of that mission, Afnic, a non-profit organization, has committed to devoting 11% of its Revenues from managing .fr Top Level Domain to actions of general interest, in particular by transferring €1.3 million each year to the Afnic Foundation for Digital Solidarity.
Afnic is also the back-end registry for the companies as well as local and regional authorities that have chosen to have their own TLD, such as .paris, .bzh, .alsace, .corsica, .mma, .ovh, .leclerc and .sncf.

Established in 1997 and based in Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines, Afnic currently has nearly 90 employees.
